How to reduce the risk of the catapult effect

Plan
- Complete a site risk assessment and rescue plan.
- Select the correct machine, as indicated by a site assessment.
- Always carry out pre-start checks on the MEWP.
- Ensure operators are trained and familiarised.
- In booms, IPAF recommends a full body harness with an adjustable restraint lanyard – adjusted as short as possible – attached to the manufacturer-designated anchorage point.
Manage
- Plan and walk the route, look out for obstructions, hidden hazards, and uneven ground.
- Make sure the ground is firm and sufficient to take the weight of the MEWP and its load.
- Observe ground conditions during operation, as these can change especially in wet or changeable weather.
- Ensure the MEWP is segregated from traffic and pedestrians.
Operate
- Maintain continual observation.
- If identified by risk assessment, use a banksman or spotter.
- When driving over uneven ground, select a slower speed and use controls smoothly.
- Do not unclip the lanyard from the anchorage point until exiting at ground level.
