How to reduce the risk of the catapult effect

Plan  

• Complete a site risk assessment and rescue plan. 
• Select the correct machine, as indicated by a site assessment.   
• Always carry out pre-start checks on the MEWP. 
• Ensure operators are trained and familiarised. 
• In booms, IPAF recommends a full body harness with an adjustable restraint lanyard – adjusted as short as possible – attached to the manufacturer-designated anchorage point. 

Manage 

• Plan and walk the route, look out for obstructions, hidden hazards, and uneven ground. 
• Make sure the ground is firm and sufficient to take the weight of the MEWP and its load. 
• Observe ground conditions during operation, as these can change especially in wet or changeable weather. 
• Ensure the MEWP is segregated from traffic and pedestrians. 

Operate  

• Maintain continual observation. 
• If identified by risk assessment, use a banksman or spotter. 
• When driving over uneven ground, select a slower speed and use controls smoothly. 
• Do not unclip the lanyard from the anchorage point until exiting at ground level.
