In 2022, IPAF President Karin Nars launched the 'Women in Powered Access' initiative, inviting women of all ages and different professional roles to share their stories of inclusivity. The initiative includes a number of key actions, including providing a platform to tell the stories of women in powered access in both the media and at industry events. IPAF will also use its own print, web and social media platforms to share these inspirational case studies and will also continue to invite prominent women speakers to present at IPAF events. IPAF will share a series of case studies at  www.ipaf.org/casestudy to communicate the opportunities our industry offers women. 

What is your role in powered access? I am an Integration Engineer at Equipment Safety Systems (EQSS) in Melbourne, Australia. Having studied electronic engineering at university, I am now responsible for integrating MEWP safety solutions, such as OverWatch secondary guarding, into different brands of scissor lifts and working closely with OEMs to ensure a successful installation.

How did you come into this industry and what attracted you to it? I was always inspired to study engineering. It was my grandfather’s dream, but I was unsure of what facet of engineering to focus on. Before making my final decision, I met with a few cousins and friends who had good careers after their completion of engineering degrees, and with their support, along with my grandfather’s, I chose to study electronic engineering, which I feel is one of the most promising areas as electronics continue to play a more significant role in product development. I earned my degree in engineering, and after moving from India to Australia, I started my career in production engineering in electronics manufacturing. It was difficult to immediately find a job in engineering, so I started out in production-focused roles to gain experience. I joined EQSS late in 2021 as an SMT Production Technician. After being recognised for my hard work, I took on the role of Integration Engineer, integrating the OverWatch secondary guarding solution into different brands of scissor lifts.

What do you find inspiring about your role? I enjoy my role because I’m continuously learning and adapting to challenges that are presented by each project. Every day is different, and I feel rewarded when I find solutions to problems. It is also inspiring to know that my work contributes to keeping workers safe and improving the overall safety of our industry.

Where do you see yourself in five years and what do you want to achieve? Long-term, my goals are to understand more about the industry, gain more experience, and continue to progress in the business. I hope to become a Senior Engineer.

What one piece of advice would you give to other women in/thinking of entering the industry? I would encourage more women to join this industry. We just need to have confidence and believe we can do these jobs, which we can. Anyone can do it. It’s not for one person, anyone can try it.
