VR MEWP simulator consultation open for online responses

MEWP VR Simulator in Action

The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) is urging people to take part in its online consultation about the use of virtual reality (VR) and Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) simulators, having recently showcased the technology at two major access industry events in France and the UK.

The MEWP simulator was one of the main draws for delegates at both the Intermat 2018 expo in Paris, France, and at Vertikal Days 2018 at Donington Park near Derby, UK, allowing users to experience operating booms and scissor lifts in a variety of scenarios without their feet ever leaving the ground. Those who tried the MEWP simulator and also a VR headset loaded with the IPAF VR pre-use inspection demo app are now invited to give their feedback at www.ipaf.org/VRconsultation

Tim Whiteman, CEO of IPAF, comments: “VR is going to transform the way powered access training and safety instruction is delivered; it’s important that we gather feedback about the potential of this ‘next generation’ technology.

“So far we have had a fantastic response to the MEWP simulator on stand at both Intermat and Vertikal Days, with more events throughout the remainder of this year already planned. In between times IPAF will host a MEWP simulator in our UK head office, so we’re also inviting members and partners to come along and try the equipment for themselves if they haven’t yet had chance to do so.

“It is clear from the two events where IPAF has been able to demonstrate the MEWP simulator that users of all ages and experience levels have been impressed but the potential of the technology, and we’d like them to give us their feedback in terms of possible uses for the simulator, including the benefits and drawbacks and any improvements they think should be made.

“By bringing the MEWP simulator to key industry events such as this, we hope to spark debate on how to adopt and adapt this technology. I urge anyone who visited Vertikal Days or Intermat this year who sought out the IPAF stand and tried the MEWP simulator for themselves to fill out the short survey at www.ipaf.org/VRconsultation – IPAF and our members look forward to your input.”
